Lairg

Timetable

This journey of 40 miles leaves the spectacular north coast to climb gradually to Lairg, the crossroads of the north.

En-route, many sites of interest are passed. There is Loch Loyal, with its turf-topped boathouse beneath the rocky torrs of Ben Loyal.

Further along, the tiny community of Altnaharra is famous for being one of the coldest places in the UK every winter. Then the lonely Crask Inn, dwarfed by the steep slopes of Ben Klibreck, offers a warm welcome within its ancient white walls.

The land now becomes more rolling, with patches of forestry shielding the lochs and peat bogs. The scenic village of Lairg lies at the foot of Loch Shin, and hosts one of the largest sheep sale yards in Europe. There are also coffee shops and an interpretation centre and, a couple of miles downstream, the Falls of Shin, where salmon can be seen leaping.

The Talmine to Lairg service (Service No2) operates every Wednesday 'AM' and is scheduled to provide a connection with the ScotRail train service between Lairg and Inverness.

**This service does not operate during Christmas and New Year weeks**
